Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) is a labeling law that requires retailers, such as full-line grocery stores, supermarkets and club warehouse stores, to notify their customers with information regarding where in the world (literally) their foods came from. These COOL produce labels keep your customers happy and in the know.

The food products covered by the law include a variety of different meat and produce items. These items are listed below.

• Muscle cut and ground meats: lamb, goat, and chicken
• Wild and farm-raised fish and shellfish
• Fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables
• Peanuts, pecans, and macadamia nuts
• Ginseng

The law was put into place on August 1st of 2008. However, there was an uproar from companies that this law should be deleted, and so it was. However, the law is still in place in certain places and may be necessary when it comes to importing food from other countries and going through customs.

Why Use Country of Origin Produce Labels? 

While the law was revoked, security is still a number one priority in households. People like to know where their food came from. When people buy something from the grocery store they want to know that the food came from a trusted source and that they can enjoy it without worry.  For a lot of the goods above, it isn’t a bad idea to let your customers know where the goods were purchased from. 

Additionally, building a community is all about trust. If your store doesn’t have trust in your quality of food, then they will probably start to shop somewhere else. One good way to build trust is by not hiding anything. Hiding something makes you look suspicious. If you give all the information up front without anyone even having to ask for it, you build a better brand image and customers are more likely to suggest your business to others.
