Copy Positions and Label Cores

Copy Positions

There are four main copy positions that label companies utilize. These copy positions can also be referred to as unwind positions. They explain the way the label unwinds from a roll.

Knowing how the labels unwind is vital when using machines to apply stickers, also known as automatic label applicators. If you get a label with the incorrect copy position, then they may end up backward or upside-down on the product. A chart is the easiest way to explain how these copy positions work.

Copy Position 1: The top of the text or art/image dispenses first. Looking at it straight on, you would see the top of the art/image or text first.

Copy Position 2: The bottom of the text or artwork dispenses first. Looking at it straight on, you would see the bottom of the text or art/image first.

Copy Position 3: The right side of the text or art/image dispenses first. Looking at it straight on, you would see the right side of the text or art/image first.

Copy Position 4: The left side of the text or artwork dispenses first. Looking at it straight on, you would see the left side of the text or art/image first.

Core Sizes and Outer Diameter

Core sizes are the size of the cardboard cylinder that the labels are wrapped onto. This core size is important for automatic label applicators as well. You must have the correct size, or the core might not fit on the machine. The most common core sizes are 1 inch and 3 inches.

You must also pay attention to the outer diameter of a roll. If the outer diameter is too big for your machine, you won’t be able to use it to apply the labels. Paying attention to copy positions, core size, and outer diameter is all crucial in finding the perfect sticker for you. We also put the weight of the product in case you need it to determine if that roll works.
